Board of Directors of Afghanistan Institute of Banking and Finance (AIBF) is the highest decision- policy making and governing body of AIBF.
The Board of Directors is comprised of 3 members:
- Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) Governor as chairman;
- Head of Afghanistan Banks Association (ABA) as member;
- Head of Microfinance Investment Support Facility of Afghanistan (MISFA) as member
Board of Directors of AIBF sets a meeting on quarterly basis or more frequently when required.
Ajmal Ahmady, Acting DAB Governor and Chairman of Board of Directors
Mr. Ajmal Ahmady was born in 1978 in Ghazni Province of Afghanistan and he has acquired higher education abroad. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Master of Economics and Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of USA. Mr. Ahmady has previously worked in many institutions in the fields of asset management, securities, and consulting in global companies here in Afghanistan and abroad. After the establishment of the National Unity Government, Mr. Ahmady has served as the senior advisor for banking and financial affairs to the president for four years and has worked as acting minister of industries and commerce of Afghanistan. During his tenure, the value of the country’s exports for the first time in history increased to one billion US dollars. Mr. Ajmal Ahmady has been appointed as Acting Governor of Da Afghanistan Bank based on presidential decree 544 on 3rd June 2020.
Prof. Dr. Mohammad Salem Omaid, President & Chief Executive Officer, Azizi Bank and Chairman, Afghanistan Banks Association and AIBF board member
Born in the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan in 1983, Dr. Omaid always dreamt of carving a niche for himself. Over the years, he developed himself as a strategist with excellence in formulating, developing & implementing business plans and policies to ensure attainment of business goals and profitable sell-through.
Raised in a well-educated family of doctors, Dr. Omaid graduated from Afghanistan and went on to complete his post-graduation in Banking & Finance from Pakistan & India. Later, he also completed his thesis on Business Administration and Financial Management and obtained the PHD from one of the premier institutions in India.
Dr. Omaid is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Azizi Bank, the largest commercial bank in the country since 2016 having started his career with the bank in 2006. In the span of 10 years, he successfully ascended the steps to become the CEO of the bank.
Within the bank, Dr. Omaid handled various roles, having rich & extensive experience in Finance & Accounting, Corporate Accounts, Trade Finance, Corporate Credit Financing, Operational Banking, Investment Banking & Retail Banking. He has been the founding pillar in ensuring Azizi Bank reaches the top of the helm and considered as the most preferred bank in the country.
He is the only Afghan conferred with the honorary professorship of Academics, Oxford. In 2020, he was conferred with the Honorary Doctorate by the European International University, France. In 2021, the World Economic Forum honored him as the Young Global Leader. He is amongst the global personalities under the age of 40 years ranging from Senators, Ministers, Sport Personnel, Bollywood Celebrities & Senior management from global companies spread across 120 nationalities worldwide. He represented Azizi Bank & Afghanistan twice at the United Nations Geneva conference to address the sustainable development goals and CSR initiatives for business growth.
Bahram Barzin, MISFA Managing Director and AIBF Board Member joined the Microfinance Investment Support Facility for Afghanistan (MISFA) in 2010 and is currently its Managing Director. Before joining MISFA, he was Deputy Chief of Party for one of the USAID’s largest rural finance projects in Afghanistan. Prior to that, Mr. Barzin served as Senior Program Manager on a number of development and humanitarian projects focusing on policy management, justice sector reform, human rights, and humanitarian relief operations. He has also served as a Lecturer at the Balkh University.
